How Often Should You Bathe A Dog?

March 22, 2021How Long Does a Dog Grooming Session Take?
Are you wondering how long does a dog grooming session will take? When you take your dog to the Parlour a full dog grooming session can take up to three hours. If the dog resists or resents the grooming process it may even take a bit longer.
As the skilled team of groomers will need to calm him down first. Most dogs seem to tolerate the process quite well and return home looking amazing and smelling clean.
Dog Grooming Session
During the grooming process, your dog will need to be kept still, and many dogs understand the process and just stand there being compliant.
Some dogs will be stressed by the process and may have to be restrained. If your dog is restrained, by the grooming noose, it doesn’t hurt him. The noose is a loop that goes around the dog’s neck, tightening when he moves and preventing the dog from jumping off the table.
If you have a dog who loves to be groomed, you are lucky, there is a poodle in my building who enjoys his weekly trip to the Grooming shop and is so good while there, just standing patiently on the table. Some dogs are a bit more active, but the groomers are trained to expect this.
Dog Grooming Products
The groomer will shampoo and scrub every inch of your dog, using special dog shampoo products. They then wash the face ears a muzzle thoroughly, as this is the only time that most dogs get washed, it has to be very thorough.
Mostly they will hose the shampoo off using a handheld hose ( like a hairdresser). Then a slightly scented pet-safe conditioner is applied to the coat and rinsed off. Drying the dog is equally important and one of three methods is used, either a handheld dryer or a towel rub.
For larger dogs, a drying fan room is used where the dog is taken in and allowed to air dry naturally over 10 minutes and then brushed.
If a dog is particularly difficult and resists grooming, it may be better to get the groomer to bring the mobile dog van to the house. They can set it up on the front lawn, and the dog will be much happier knowing that he is at home.
If you have an indoor dog it is extremely important for him to be groomed every week, and if you are in a hot climate, the grooming team can give your dog flea treatment. As you can see it is necessary to book your dog in for his appointment, as it can be time-consuming.
It is important that the dog likes the experience and until the dog gets used to the dog grooming session, short sessions may be recommended.
Some dogs will require a bit more grooming than others, because of their long coats, and Cocker Spaniels and Golden Retrievers can become a bit tangled, the groomer will need to work on the knots.
Once your Dog has been Groomed
Not all dogs like the smell of the product, so if you are walking take your dog home on the leash. You don’t want him to roll in anything and undo all the good work.
Dogs have a preference for their own odors and will roll in the dirt, or run into the nearest duck pond to normalize themselves. Of course, this is counterproductive, so take him straight home and give him some dog treats for being such a good boy.
Positive reinforcement and reward are a very important part of dog training, and you don’t want him to run off and get dirty again, yet. Some dogs look amazing following grooming, and the poodle has his own Facebook page and the owner always posts a photo on his return from being groomed.
This is good free advertising for the groomer, and they love the publicity!
